Refurbishment of railway springs




Springs on pivoted bogies of railway vehicles need to be checked and serviced at regular intervals. There are clear regulations as to how and when this is to be carried out. We offer refurbishment of rail vehicle springs, e.g. to comply with VPI 05 or Rail Directive 984.0500.

What is tested, what needs to be repaired?


Leaf springs and parabolic springs are tested for:

   - Cracks and fractures in the leaves of the spring,
   - Cracked or broken weld seam between drive key and spring band,
   - Nicks and furrows on the leaves of the spring erben und Riefen in den Federblättern,
   - Cracked, broken or loose spring band,
   - Displacement of the leaves of the spring ,
   - Compliance with the respectively-specified works limits (such as build heights, carrying heights or, on leaf springs, clearances),

Parabolic springs are additionally tested for:

   - Cracked, broken, displaced or missing drive keys and/or nose keys,
   - Cracked or broken weld seam between drive key and spring band,
   - Leaves that have opened up on the spring, where the guide effect of groove and rib is no longer active,

If one of these situations pertains or if the springs do not comply with the works limits, they need to be refurbished.


Compression springs are tested for:

   - Broken-off ends,
   - Corrosion pits,
   - Chafing marks - misalignment,
   - Visibly uneven coil spacing’s,
   - Signs of thermal stressing and impact marks – compliance with the specified carrying heights and build heights as indicated in the drawing or in VPI05 and RIL984.500,

If one of these situations applies or if the carrying heights are not correct, than the compression spring must be scrapped.

Measurements and tests are performed using only calibrated and licensed measuring devices.
